Google Ads vs Meta Ads: Where Should Malaysian SMEs Spend First?

Search captures demand. Social creates it. Which one deserves your first ringgit depends on one question.

It is one of the most common questions we hear from Malaysian business owners: should we put our budget into Google Ads or Facebook and Instagram ads? The honest answer is that they do different jobs. Understanding that difference will save you months of trial and error.

Google Ads captures demand

People on Google are actively looking for something. When someone searches "corporate catering Kuala Lumpur" or "warehouse racking supplier Selangor", they have a need right now. Google Ads lets you appear in front of that intent.

  • Best for: services people search for, B2B products, urgent needs and high-value purchases.
  • Strength: high intent, so leads tend to be more qualified.
  • Limitation: you can only reach people who are already searching. If nobody searches for your product, there is little to buy.

Meta Ads creates demand

People on Facebook and Instagram are not searching. They are scrolling. Meta's strength is showing your product to people who match your ideal customer but did not know you existed.

  • Best for: visual products, new categories, impulse purchases, events and local promotions.
  • Strength: large reach at a lower cost per impression, with strong creative formats.
  • Limitation: lower intent, so you need good creative and a clear funnel to turn attention into sales.

The one question that decides where to start

Ask yourself: are people already searching for what I sell? Use Google's Keyword Planner to check monthly search volume in Malaysia for your main products or services.

  • If there is meaningful search volume, start with Google Search. You will learn what converts with less waste.
  • If search volume is low or your product is new, start with Meta to build awareness, then add Google remarketing and brand search.

A simple starting split

For most SMEs with an initial budget of RM 6,000 to RM 10,000 a month, we often recommend roughly 60 to 70 percent on the channel that matches your main buying behaviour and the rest on the other for testing. After eight weeks, move budget toward whichever channel delivers the lower cost per qualified lead, not the lower cost per click.

Do not skip tracking

Whichever platform you choose, set up conversion tracking before you spend. That means GA4, the Meta Conversions API and Google enhanced conversions, plus tracking for WhatsApp clicks and calls, which are how many Malaysians prefer to enquire. Without it, both platforms optimise blind.

Do not compare platforms on clicks. Compare them on qualified leads and revenue, measured the same way.

Stay within ad policies

Both platforms review ads and landing pages. Avoid exaggerated or guaranteed claims, before-and-after images and copy that implies personal attributes, such as "Are you struggling with your weight?". Make sure your landing page shows your business name, contact details and privacy policy. Compliant ads get approved faster and keep your account healthy.
