Many marketing reports in Malaysia still open with impressions, reach, followers and clicks. These numbers are easy to grow and easy to celebrate. They are also easy to grow without selling anything. That is why we call them vanity metrics.
What makes a metric a vanity metric?
A vanity metric is a number that can go up while the business stays the same. Impressions, page views, likes and follower counts all fall into this group. They are not useless; they help diagnose problems. But they should never be the headline of your report.
The metrics that connect to revenue
- Qualified leads: enquiries that match your target customer, not every form fill.
- Cost per qualified lead: total spend divided by qualified leads, by channel.
- Lead-to-customer rate: the share of leads that become paying customers.
- Customer acquisition cost (CAC): marketing and sales cost to win one customer.
- Return on ad spend (ROAS): revenue generated for every ringgit of ad spend.
- Revenue by channel: which channels produce customers, not just traffic.
Why most businesses cannot report on revenue yet
The usual blocker is not the ad platform. It is the gap between marketing and sales. Leads arrive by form, phone and WhatsApp, get handled by different people and are rarely tracked through to a sale. Closing that gap usually means three things:
- Capturing every lead, including WhatsApp and calls, in a CRM.
- Recording the source of each lead with UTM parameters and click IDs.
- Marking leads as qualified, won or lost, and sending that data back to Google and Meta.
A one-page report your management will read
We recommend every monthly report starts with the same five lines: total marketing spend, qualified leads, cost per qualified lead, new customers and revenue attributed to marketing. Channel details, creative results and impressions belong further down as supporting evidence.
The best marketing report is the one your finance team agrees with.
Start small
You do not need a perfect attribution model to start. Even a simple spreadsheet that tracks leads by source and outcome for three months will change which campaigns you fund. Then build from there.
