Xiaohongshu (小红书), often called XHS or RED, started as a shopping community and has grown into a lifestyle search engine. In Malaysia it is used by Malaysian Chinese consumers, international students and tourists from mainland China to research cafés, travel spots, skincare, fashion, property and education.
If your customers include Chinese-speaking audiences, XHS deserves a place in your plan. Here is how to approach it.
How XHS is different from Instagram
- Search matters most. Users type questions into XHS the way they would into Google. Notes that answer those searches keep getting found for months.
- Useful beats polished. Honest, detailed notes with practical tips perform better than glossy brand ads.
- Saves signal value. A note that is saved is a note that is trusted. Saves and comments matter more than likes.
Step 1: Set up a credible account
Choose between a brand (enterprise) account and a professional account depending on your business type and goals. Complete the profile in Simplified Chinese with a clear description of who you are, where you are located and what makes you different.
Step 2: Research XHS keywords
Search your category on XHS and note the suggested searches, for example "吉隆坡咖啡馆" (Kuala Lumpur café) or "马来西亚留学" (study in Malaysia). Build a keyword list and plan notes around the questions people actually ask.
Step 3: Publish native notes consistently
A strong XHS note usually has an eye-catching cover image with a short headline, several images or a short video, and 300 to 800 characters of genuinely useful text. Common formats include:
- Guides and checklists, such as "5 things to know before visiting".
- Honest reviews and comparisons.
- Behind-the-scenes content showing how products are made or services delivered.
Aim for at least two to three notes a week. Consistency builds both search visibility and account trust.
Step 4: Work with KOCs, transparently
Key opinion consumers (KOCs) are everyday users with engaged followings. A group of ten relevant KOCs often outperforms one large KOL in credibility and cost. Always use the platform's disclosure features for paid collaborations. Undisclosed advertising breaks platform rules and damages trust.
Step 5: Amplify what works with XHS ads
Once a note performs well organically, promote it to reach more of your target audience, or use search ads to appear on high-intent keywords. Paying to boost proven content is far more efficient than paying to push untested ads.
On Xiaohongshu, the brands that win are the ones that sound like a helpful friend, not a press release.
How to measure XHS results
Track note views, saves, comments and profile visits, but connect them to business outcomes too: XHS-specific promo codes, a "mentioned XHS" option in your booking form, or dedicated landing pages. For F&B and retail, ask staff to note customers who found you on XHS.
Is XHS right for your brand?
XHS works best for lifestyle categories: food and beverage, beauty, fashion, travel, education, property and wellness. If a meaningful share of your customers are Chinese-speaking, it is one of the most cost-effective channels available today.
